The Pattern Library

The Pattern Library

Five ways a leader's nervous system takes over under pressure.

Long before you had words for any of it, your nervous system learned one main strategy for surviving pressure. Everyone runs all five patterns below to some degree. One of them leads.

Why this happens

Leadership doesn't create these patterns. It reveals them.

Every leader running something real eventually gets tested by pressure they didn't choose: a launch that slips, a cofounder disagreement, a team member who quits at the worst possible time, a quarter that doesn't go the way the deck said it would. What happens in that moment usually isn't a decision. It's a reflex, and it was installed a long time before the company existed.

That reflex is a survival pattern. It's not a personality type and it's not a diagnosis. It's a strategy your nervous system built early, when it was smart and small and doing its best to stay safe, and it never got the memo that the danger passed. Under enough pressure, that old strategy still takes the wheel, usually faster than your thinking mind can weigh in.

Five patterns show up most often in leaders. Most people run a primary pattern and a secondary one that shows up when the first one is maxed out. None of them are a problem to fix. Each one has a real gift inside it, and each one charges an energy tax that quietly shapes your business, your body, and the people who live with you.

This pattern is drawn from body-based character structure work, a lineage of observation about how the nervous system organizes itself under stress that is nearly a century old. It is not clinical science and it is not a diagnosis. Think of it as a map for a territory you already live in.

How to use this library

Read for recognition, not for a label

You'll likely see pieces of yourself in more than one pattern below. That's normal and expected. Most leaders run a primary pattern that takes over first, and a secondary one that shows up once the first is maxed out and the pressure keeps rising.

A useful way to read these five pages: notice which one describes not just how you act under pressure, but what your body actually does, where the tension sits, what you go quiet about, what you can't stop doing. The pattern that makes you slightly uncomfortable to read is usually the one worth reading twice.

If you want a more precise read than self-recognition can give you, the Leadership Pattern Diagnostic below takes about three minutes and gives you both your primary and secondary pattern, along with an honest read on whether private work is the right next step. Sometimes it isn't, and the diagnostic will say so.

The five patterns

Read the one that sounds like you first.

Each page below goes deep on one pattern: how it shows up at work and at home, where it lives in the body, what it costs, the gift inside it, and a 60-second reset built specifically for it.

Working with a pattern

Knowing your pattern is the start, not the finish

Reading about a pattern usually produces one of two reactions: quiet recognition, or the specific discomfort of being described a little too accurately. Both are useful. Neither one changes anything by itself.

The patterns above were installed in the body, under real pressure, a long time ago. That means the work of changing them has to include the body too, not just new information about how you operate. Mental insight alone rarely holds up once the stakes get high again.

I've coached more than 15,000 people over 20 years, and I take on a small number of private clients directly, capped at eight at a time, so the work stays close and specific. It's private 1:1 work for founders, executives and high performers who are done paying an energy tax they never agreed to.

I work with clients across all five patterns, and with people who run a blend of two. There's no pattern that disqualifies someone from this work, and there's no pattern that makes it unnecessary. The question isn't which pattern is worse. It's whether the tax you're currently paying is one you're willing to keep paying for another five years.

Who this is for

Founders, executives and high performers

I work with leaders carrying real weight: founders mid-build, executives running large teams, high performers whose success has started to cost them more than it should. I'm based in San Diego and work with clients worldwide, in person and remotely.

This isn't therapy and it isn't a personality test. It's a way of understanding what's actually running the show when the stakes go up, so you can lead from more than your oldest survival strategy.
